Where you came from

Family, home, and the early years

You did not start from nothing. Somebody taught you what to want and what to hide, usually without meaning to.

These questions look back, kindly. Not to blame anyone. To see what you kept, and decide what to keep.

01

What is a sentence you heard growing up that you still live by, for better or worse?

Some of these are gifts. Some are heavy. Both are worth seeing clearly.
02

What did your family do well that you want to keep?

Even difficult families got some things right. Keep those.
03

What did home smell, sound, and look like? Write it so a stranger could stand in it.

The details hold more than the summary does.
04

Who in your childhood made you feel safe? What did they do?

That is a blueprint. You can be that for someone, including yourself.
05

What did you have to work out alone that you wish someone had taught you?

Naming it is the first step to teaching it to someone else.
06

What were you praised for as a child? What were you corrected for?

Those two lists shaped what you still chase and what you still hide.
07

Which of your parents' struggles do you understand better now than you did then?

Understanding is not the same as excusing. But it is lighter.
08

What did you promise yourself your life would not be like?

Promises made young are strong. Check which ones you have kept.
09

Where do you feel you belong, and when did you first feel it?

Belonging has a location and a date. Knowing both helps you find it again.
10

What good thing did a hard childhood, or a hard year, leave you with?

Not gratitude for the hard thing. Just collecting what it left behind.
11

What family story do you tell most? Why that one?

The stories we repeat are the ones we are still working out.
12

What would you like your younger self to know about how it turned out?

Write to them. They would want to hear from you.
13

What tradition, big or small, do you want to start?

Roots are not only inherited. Some you plant.
