Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue.

Rainer Maria RilkeLetters to a Young Poet

Locked rooms

A nineteen-year-old cadet at a military academy wrote to Rilke asking whether he should be a poet, and whether his poems were any good. Rilke wrote back and refused to answer either question. He said the asking was the problem.

You do not figure out who you are. You live it, mostly without noticing, and one morning you realise you walked into the answer years ago without being told.

The locked rooms are not keeping you out. They are keeping something for later. Stop rattling the handles.
