Freedom

Living on your own terms

Freedom is not a passport or a number in a bank account. It is the moment you catch yourself asking permission and realise there is nobody at the desk.

The people in this room walked away from things everyone else was still queuing for. None of them asked for it back.

The message is sitting there and you already know the answer is no, and you are typing out the third draft of a paragraph explaining why. Delete the paragraph. No is a full sentence. It does not need a reason attached, and it does not need softening with three exclamation marks and an apology. Every yes you give out of guilt is an hour of your life handed to someone who did not earn it. And here is the tell: the people who get angry when you finally say no are, every time, the people who were benefiting from your never saying it.

You have been standing at a counter for years, waiting for someone to come out of the back and give you the go-ahead. Start the thing. Leave the job. Call yourself a writer, or whatever the word is. There is nobody in the back. There never was. The counter is something you built so you would have somewhere to wait. Walk around it.

Pavel Durov built the biggest social network in Russia. Then the government asked him for the data of people who had been protesting, and he said no, and he lost the company. He left the country with a suitcase and built Telegram instead. He has said in interviews that he owns no house, no yacht, no jet. He rents. He keeps his life light enough to leave any country in a day. Not because he cannot afford the house. Because every single thing you own is a handle somebody can grab you by, and he wanted nothing to be grabbed by. You do not have to live like that. But it is worth asking, honestly, what in your life would make you say yes to something you should refuse. The mortgage? The title? The approval of one specific person? That is exactly where your freedom stops.
